“Lead” – An Inside And Outside Perspective
Wednesday, May 8th, 2013| An Inside Perspective From GOAT |
I wrote the chorus lyrics and melody to this tune several years ago. At the time, it didn’t fit any of the projects I was working on, so I just tucked it away. In March of this year, I woke up singing this song and excitedly hit up Double J to start working on the music immediately. Originally we intended on releasing another tune as our 1st single, but the content for this track needed to be published ASAP because of current events. I’m obviously not a thugged out gangster rapper, but guns have been a big part of my life since I was a child. Without hunting, my Dad and I wouldn’t have as close of a relationship as we do. This song isn’t
necessarily a direct political statement; it’s simply about protecting myself and my family from harm. I added a small bit of humor in the 2nd verse to lighten the mood, but I’m an extremely careful and responsible gun owner that doesn’t take safety lightly.

As the first release off the senseless project, this track evoked a sense of urgency because of the current state of events concerning firearms here in the U.S. While most of the other tracks on the project focus on the deprivation of our senses, this song was actually about trying to make sense of a situation. It’s about choice, and one’s right to have a choice. When you listen to the story, you have to decide what you would do in that situation. It’s meant to be an engaging song. The soundscape was easy, but I didn’t want to
be too cliché. I wanted to let loose a hard-hitting throwback to West Coast gangsta beats to take us to a dangerous place, but laced in a lot of piano work to help build the drama. Keep an ear out for more upcoming releases from this experiment called senseless (brought to you by GOAT and myself, Double J)!

Let’s start with the production, it’s real solid…and I’m a huge of fan of sample-free music. As far as I can tell, this is sample-free. And it’s pretty flawless! GOAT picked a real serious topic for today’s time.
And it’s about time someone came at this topic from a gun supporter’s point of view, he nailed it. The cadence and melodies are all on point. Overall, the only thing lacking from the track are some ill melodic scratches. With all that being said, this track has replay value of 5 out of 6.
