Dallas Art: ArtLoveMagic’s Underground Artist Feature
GOAT is one of the musical performers at Underground.
GOAT relates these feelings to his music, “I’m the illegitimate child of promiscuous genres. I represent The Intelligent South – soulful indie music, melodic and insightful lyrics, live instrumentation with a homegrown feel.” He goes on to say, “My inspiration comes from one simple thought, the rest comes to me in pieces and I take notes on myself. Then I try to fit those pieces together, which sometimes comes easily and sometimes takes more effort.”
GOAT is a co-producer of ArtLoveMagic’s Underground and he says, “Underground is a chance to showcase and uncover some of the best, but undiscovered talent in Dallas. It’s about unification, networking, sharing the love you have for your art, and experiencing new things that you may not have been aware of.”
GOAT is a recognized talent throughout Dallas. PegasusNews.com states, “Each of his songs takes on its own distinct flavor, pulling from varied musical and lyrical sources.” When writing, GOAT is a focused musician carefully crafting each phrase to perfection. On stage, he immediately attracts his audience with an inviting, endless energy. Check out his Website and “like” his Facebook page today.
After Underground you can find the CYPHER; the massive collaborative song performed by over 15 different artists at www.musicbygoat.bandcamp.com

Underground
Dallas is filled with talented artists, musicians, and performers. Typically these separate entertainment genres stay just that - separate. They often compete with one another for your attention and attendance. ArtLoveMagic has a different idea and they are changing the paradigm. Founders Michael Lagocki, Justin Nygren, and David Rodriguez bring talent of diverse forms together to create something much more than just an art showing or concert. Their events are more like carnivals with much to see and do - a continual flow of eclectic entertainment.
On February 12th, they offer up Underground at the Janette Kennedy Gallery in the South Side on Lamar building. It boasts over 50 locals delivering music, art, dancing, photography, fashion, body painting, comedians, and more. Underground is expected to be the biggest ArtLoveMagic show ever. It is loaded with talent like Spoonfed Tribe, CoLab, galleryCat, GOAT, Hologram Dagger, JackRabbit James, and much much more.
ArtLoveMagic events raise money and bring joy to local charities like Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, Children’s Medical Center, and various libraries and schools, and they do this without gouging attendees. Tickets are only $10 at the door ($7 in advance!). If you’re looking for an evening of non-stop fun and top-level entertainment (Valentine’s date?), get to the Underground.

DJSeanP.com - Mileage: Retuned
I had the pleasure of working with GOAT a few months ago on the remix of his album Mileage, which he recorded with dj three6t. The remixed album is called Mileage: Retuned and can be downloaded on Bandcamp for free.
I worked on the song Damn Near On Empty. The original song had a real acoustic feel to it with live drums, acoustic guitar, and Wurlitzer sounding keys. I caught the vibe quick and knew I could rework it with a raw sample and cuts for the hook. I chopped up a Bohannon sample with the quickness on the MPC and headed right to Serato for some cuts. The lyrics are really the driving force of the song, so the minimalist vibe worked well, in my opinion.
Unfortunately, when I bounced my parts of the remix and sent them to GOAT, the automated mute on my scratches decided they wanted to be heard. So, the final song, which is on Bandcamp, has a scratch chorus with overlapping tracks…not my intention. Learn from my mistake - double check your bounces. Hahaha…
Thanks to GOAT for asking me to be a part of this project. He’s a great songwriter, and I think we really turned this one out.

WhatTheElle.com Featured Artist
I think when most people think about Dallas Hip Hop, the name “GOAT” typically comes to mind. He has kind of become a staple in the scene since he moved back to Dallas in 2005 after graduating from UNT with a Bachelor of Music Degree, with a concentration on classical voice and education. I have known him since 2006 or so, when we met through a friend in the music scene, but we didn’t start doing shows together ’til 2008 when we started writing The 4 Track Sessions project with JackRabbit and three6t. Since we released that project, Justin and I have been doing shows together almost every month, and even did a joint CD Release Party in 2009 at the Curtain Club. Not only is he one of my closest friends, he is also one of the most driven and talented people I know. What does Justin do Monday – Friday? He is an elementary school music teacher, and I never tire of hearing the funny stories about his kids, or listening to him talk about how proud he is of them for this or for that.
He has worked on projects with anyone and everyone in the Dallas Hip Hop scene and even features his cousin’s band Jacknife on his latest album “Mileage.” Adding a unique vocal line to most of his songs, he is not a stranger to any genre and is leaning more towards expanding his own collection of songs, pushing his creative mind constantly out of hip hop. He is the kind of person who just gets things done, and has pushed me creatively and vocationally to work harder and harder to achieve my goals and dreams. I could really just go on and on…but I will spare you. Check him out! You will not be sorry.
Other mediums of art you use frequently ?
The other mediums all point back to music, but I continue to sharpen my skills in spoken word, videography, video editing, web design, graphic design, audio engineering, and education.
What inspires you?
You. Them. Living. Daily things. Everyday experiences. I’m an obsessive and extremely analytical person, so I pay attention to everything. If you just open your eyes, there’s inspiration crawling everywhere you look.
Favorite Dallas Artist?
The beautiful Elle, of course. Naw, seriously, there’s way too many to list! The talent in this city is ridiculous. Here’s a few of my favorites – Video: Teddy Cool, Drawing: Michael Lagocki & Josh Boulet, Painting: David Rodriguez, Isaac & Jerod Davies, Music: three6t, SteveWick, JRabb, Blunt Force Crew, Kilo Art-of-Fact, Larry Gayao, Grant Braudrick…do you want me to go on?

Underground Cypher
On Sunday, October 17, 2010 we collected some of the most amazing musicians and mc’s at the ArtLoveMagic office to begin the construction of a collaborative cypher to be delivered at the next Underground event. Amongst the crew were Paul Escalante and Evan Johnson of CoLab, GOAT, dj three6t, Leaf, Matt Barron, and JackRabbit James. More musicians will be added. Also joining the assembled were Edward Adyr and Pablo Herrera of Ufilmhouse (http://www.ufilmhouse.com) who will be creating a video for the jam. The lyrics will focus on encouraging artists of any medium to take charge of the talents and create the opportunities for success. The sound…is freaking awesome and will include most of the musical talent showcased in Underground 2011.
Underground will be held at the Janette Kennedy Gallery and the connecting hallway at South Side on Lamar. It will be huge and you should be there. Keep a look out for more information on the event.
Peace-
David Rodriguez
